What is Power Supply (SMPS) | Explain Power Supply

Power Supply, SMPS, what is power connector, what is AT connector, ATX power connector, Standard power connector, Berg connector, Molex Connector

The computer components would not be able to operate without power. So a device in the computer that provide this power is the power supply. A power supply convert 110, 220 or 240 VAC in to DC voltages. That’s a computer needs to operate.

What is SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply)

It is called SMPS because it convert or switch single mode of AC Current in  multimode of the DC Voltages. These voltages are

+5VDC, -5VDC

+12 VDC, -12VDC

+3.3 VDC

+ 5VDC Stand by power

Power Connector

  • Power supply use four types of power connector.
  1. Floppy Drive Power Connector (Berg Connector)
  2. AT System Connector
  3. ATX Power Connector
  4. Standard Peripheral Power Connector (Molex Connector)

Floppy Drive Power Connector

There are 4 pin power connector provide 2 voltages +5VDC carried on the Red wire and +12 VDC carried on the Yellow wire and two Black ground wire for 0 VDC

AT (Advanced Technology) Power Connector

There are 2 six pin power connector provide the power of AT motherboard. It is oldest technology. It provide 4 voltage's (+5VDC, -5VDC, +12 VDC, -12 VDC with ground 0 VDC)

ATX (Advanced Technology Extended) Connector

There are 20 pin single power connector & provide the six voltages for the ATX motherboard.

+5VDC, -5VDC

+12 VDC, -12VDC

+3.3 VDC

+ 5VDC Stand by power

Standard Peripheral Power Connector

There are 4 pin power connector and provide 2 voltages as same like floppy drive connector but it is larger and flatter then floppy. And provide the power of internal disk storage devices. (HDD, CD & DVD)

SATA Power Connector

There are 4 wires going to this connector. But finally convert into 15 pin connector and provides the power of the latest SATA HDD or DVD.
